About the artwork
Margot Roi is an artist whose work is deeply influenced by her educational background in fine art and fabric design. She studied fine art in the 1980s, a period that emphasized statement art, which is characterized by its expressive, narrative, and process-driven qualities. These aspects are evident in her large landscape paintings, where she incorporates these concepts to convey powerful visual stories.
In addition to her fine art degree, Roi also holds a fabric design degree from Sheridan College. This aspect of her education brings a vibrant, colourful dimension to her work, reflecting the influence of fabric design. Her use of bright colours and the representation of hills and valleys are particularly notable, adding a distinct and lively character to her pieces.
Roi's artistic journey involves blending these two influences—fine art's narrative and process-driven approach with fabric design's bold use of colour and form. This fusion is most evident in her water scapes, which combine the narrative element with the aesthetic qualities derived from her fabric design background. These water scapes represent her unique style, showcasing her ability to create works that are both visually engaging and conceptually rich.
